Climategate - ”Hide the decline”

After the 1940 peak, the global temperatures declined until around 1977. This decline appears from directly measured temperatures as well as “temperature proxies”, that is indications of past temperatures stored in the nature (Sea floors, ice cores etc.).

Directly measured temperatures:

National Geographic, Northern hemisphere temperatures: A peak is seen around 1940. Thereafter the decline towards 1977:

Below, the original National Geographic NH temperature data compared to med CRU/Hadcrut/Brohan 2008 NH temperature data (blue graph):

Size of the NH temperature decline 1940-1970:

National Geographic 1976: Decline approximately 0,5 degrees celsius

CRU/Hadcrut/Brohan 2008: Decline approximately  0,16 degrees celsius

So it seems that “The decline” with Hadcrut graph 2008 illustrated around 0,34 degrees celsius less than when illustrated in 1976. In this context one should recall, that in the CRU codes, code comments and emails is describes that this decline should be avoided.

Proxy temperatures:

In the graph below – CRU´s Osborn 1999 temperature proxy graph – shows the ”decline” 1940-1978. (Like the National geographic we see a 0,5 K decline.)

This time the decline is avoided by ending the temperature data in 1960. Later data was not puplished by the IPCC.
