Climategate

The discrepancy between

a) the information available for people and political leaders concerning the climate

and

b) solid robust measured data from real world

- illustrates the extend of  ”climategate”.

”Climategate” is just a new title for the problems in climate science which has been discussed in many years.

The ”Climategate” title appeared after a leak or a hacker attack on the worlds perhaps most important centre of climate science, the British ”CRU” – ”Climate Research Unit” on East Angllia University. This occurred in November  2009.

The Leak comprised approximately 2000 emails and more than 150 megabyte programming code, documents and results. A major part of the content illustrated already known issues, but the extraordinary event on CRU appeared to enforce the media interest in the climate science issues and scandals.

Here 2 TV documentaries from Finnish television:

- it appears that Finnish scientists cannot see a trace of global warming in their data from Finland, for example the Kottajärvi lake that IPCC scientist Micheal Mann uses in his 2008 “hockeystik”. Michael Mann continues to interpret Kottajärvi data as if it shows global warming, and the Finnish scientists wonders aloud.

In the leaked CRU data we find illustrated a database of treering-data used to establish temperatures of the past. This data is gathered from large parts of the world.

The blue graphs shows tree ring width and tree density trends. Tree ring data shows decline after 1940.

In other words, the basis for CRU before creating graphs showing strong global warming in the second half of the twentieth century from tree data is not obvious. Here a couple of program codes and mails:

CRU´s program codes are used to transform incoming data to the final temperature graphs. With the CRU leak we have learned, that many program codes are designed to add extra varming trend after 1940 and programmes had a std. mechanism to shorten temperature series after 1940 and 1960.

The programmers writes again and again in the code comments, that their codes will result in artificial temperature graphs.

Examples, CRU program codes:

Notice the ”fudge factor”. This code adds more varmth to the temperature trends after 1940, and mostly in the recent decades:

Here an example from comments in CRU code that produces historic temperatures:

Tree ring data is modified to appear like observed temperatures, the programmer writes.

Now and then the leaked CRU documents are defended as purely “Fresh colleague talk”. Other times the CRU documents are defended by saying that it is in fact fair not to show data after 1940 that does not resemble the temperatures measured mostly in cities (GISS, Hadcrut etc.). So suddenly, the “hide the decline” codes and comments are for real, but justifiable, some says. However, if tree data fails to illustrate warming after 1940, can you then use this method to rule out warming in medieval times? Hardly, but this is what the IPCC does.

Mails: Here an example showing how scientists struggle to get rid of the heat peak around 1940. ”sst” = Sea Surface Temperature” – and yes, it is not only tree rings that shows the 1940 peak:

Tom Wigley wants to adjust peak in SST around 1940 down with 0,15 degrees Celsius as this would be significant for the global temperatures, and yet still corresponds to the peak in land temperatures around 1940. He believe people would speculate if there where no 1940 peak in sst. Its quite obvious from the mail, that the 0,15 degrees Celsius adjustment is not a result of scientific results, but just a number Tom Wigley finds useful.

Scientists are discussing how to get sceptical scientists and publishers fired from their jobs, how to ensure that articles and results not in line with IPCC are suppressed from being peer reviewed and puplished. In some cases delay of sceptical articles are carried out successfully coordinated by the people from the CRU mails.

”Climategate” covers a long row of other IPCC-related scandals, here some more examples:
