Corals, pH and CO2

We have seen under “Corals and the Great Barrier Reef” that the great barrier reef is groing in warmer periods. Variations in pH and CO2 did not change this.

Corals originates from ages with 10 – 20 times more CO2 in the atmosphere than today. CO2 is a building block in shells in CaCO3, Calciumcarbonat/Aragonit. The level of free Calcium ions far outnumbers CO2 ions, and therefore CO2 is likely to be the limiting factor when building see shells.

The growth response to more CO2 is however different from species to species:

Left grown at present CO2-level. right grown at higher CO2 levels.
