Glaciers

If the glacier retreat has continued after 1940, then glaciers are shorter today than in 1940. But this does not reflect if it is warmer or colder today than on 1940. It tels that the glacier retreat has been going on after 1940 as well. More interesting is the fact, that glacier retreat speed does not appear affected by the explosion in human CO2 emissions 1960-70, the retreat is in fact rather constant from 1830 till today – perhaps even a little slower the last 40 years compared with the 1830-2000 trend.

The purpose of focusing on glaciers in the climate debate is questionable. The global temperatures are obviously better indicators of global temperatures than glaciers. Glaciers have a complicated life. But if glaiciers are in fact used to determine global warming, there is nothing in the retreat speeds indicating that is should be warmer today than 1940.
