Mozambique

RUTI – Mozambique

- How a significant decade long warm peak was removed from temperature data in SE Africa.

FIg 1, Stations used to estimate a Mozambique average temperature trend. All stations in Mozambique are cut off in 1990 by GHCN and therefore a few foreign temperature sets are included.

The big ”M” of  Mozambique:

Fig 2. Most longer datasets from Mozambique are included, however, not Maputo, Large city. All data series from Mozambique has no data 1991-2006, and therefore the near by stations Harare(Zimbabwe after 1960) and Mtware (Tanzania after 1970) was included by best fit. Even so, still 2 datapoints - 2004 and 2005  -where missing and was set by interpolating.

From the 1935 – 2010 temperature trend appears mostly flat, however, we se a significant M-shaped temperature rise 1960 to 1970.

However, if we check out Hadcruts version of Mozambique data … Where is the “Mozambique M” 1960-70?

Fig3. The Mozambique M is erased systematically. (From the above, the UHI of Loruencois visible).
And watch how Hadcrut after erasing the M-peak suddenly chooses to show data for all stations all the way to year 1999, not just 1990 where GHCN cut all series. So again, data not shown by GHCN is certainly very likely to exist.

How can the “Mozambique M” be an error when spread out over the whole country of Mozambique? This rules out any individual station-site issue. And more.  the “Mozambique M” is cleary present in the Zimbawe data and Tanzania data I used too. To what ever caused the Mozambique M is not limited to the country Mozambique.

Fig4. Click to enlarge. In fact, The “Mozambique M” 1960-70 is visible in most neighbouring countries: Parts of Zimbawe, Malawi, Madagascar and South Africa:

Fig5. – “The Mozambique M” near Mozambique, in South Africa.

What is more odd: Hadcrut did not remove the “Mozambique M” away from many of the surrounding stations In south Africa nor in Madagascar (Maintirango, Majunga, Antalaha etc.)

However, Hadcrut has reduced temperatures in the 1960-70 period dropwise in larger area around Mozambique even for stations not showing the Mozambique M.

IF there should be some valid reason for erasing the Mozambique M, this erasing appears to be a sloppy work indeed.
